Types of WHOIS data for a domain: Expiry date

The expiration date of a domain can be checked through the whois search tool, to know when a domain ends its active period within its life cycle.

 

It is important to renew your domain before the expiration date to ensure it continues working correctly.

 

Below we show you how to verify the expiration date that appears when you run a whois lookup for a domain:

 

Normally, you will see it in a field named: “Record expires” or “Expiration date”.

 

For domains whose whois information is managed by the registry operator (.com, .net), you may find two references to the expiration date in a whois lookup:

  • The date indicated by the company managing the extension (shown first)
  • The one shown by the registrar (in our case Cdmon) (displayed further down)

 

In this situation, you should always trust the date shown by the registrar (the one appearing further down), because sometimes the dates may differ:
