The .co domain is a geographic top-level domain (ccTLD) assigned to Colombia, although it is also widely used as an abbreviation for "company" or "corporation".

Registering a .co domain

Restrictions in the registration of .co domains:
- .co domains can have a maximum of 63 characters and a minimum of 3.
- Accepted characters for domain registration are: a-z, 0-9 and the hyphen " - ". The "-" cannot appear at the beginning or at the end of the name.
- They can be registered for a period of up to 5 years.
Restrictions for .co domain renewals:
- A .co domain has a renewal period of 1 to 5 years.
- They cannot be renewed more than 60 days before their expiration.
Restrictions for .co domain transfers:
- .co domains cannot be transferred if they are expired.
- .co domains cannot be transferred if they are in clientTransferProhibited status.
- To start the transfer of .co domains, the AUTH CODE is required.
Since domains have an expiration date, they go through several phases or periods. This lifecycle is established by ICANN, the entity responsible for regulations applicable to domains. In the following graphic we show you the lifecycle of a .co domain and its statuses.
- Available domain: the domain has not yet been registered, therefore it is available for registration. Once a registration request is submitted, it will be assigned to the first received request.
- Registered domain: when a request is submitted for an available domain, it is assigned to the person who requested it. When submitting a registration request, it can be registered for 1 to 5 years.
- Active domain: the domain will remain active for the years it was registered for. During this period, you can extend the registration time to avoid the domain expiring starting from 2 months before the expiration date.
- Grace period: grace period: the domain has expired and stops functioning. This period lasts 44 days during which you can renew the domain without penalty fees.
- Redemption period: redemption period: this period lasts 15 days, during which the domain has been deleted but can be restored and renewed at a higher cost than a standard renewal.
- Pending delete: the domain cannot be restored and will be released.
