.eu domain information

Here you will find all the information related to .eu domains.

General Information
The .eu domain refers to the European Union. In the year 2000, during the Lisbon summit, the creation of this domain was approved to provide citizens and companies of the Union the possibility to expand on the Internet with a common identity under the protection of European legislation.

However, the process did not really begin until 2006, as in April of that year the free registration of .eu domains opened.

The registry (Eurid) performs a random validation in which it sends an email to the domain owner's contact so they can access the Eurid website and upload legally valid documentation to identify the owner within 14 days. If the documentation is not provided, the domain may be suspended or removed.

Reasons to register a .eu domain
Strengthening the European identity, improving internal trade, and offering protection to European companies and citizens in relation to the rest of the world were the main reasons that led the European Union to create its own domain. An important motivation for hosting your company’s website under a .eu domain is the possibility of opening up to the European market and taking advantage of the reputation that the European Union has worldwide.

If you click here, you will see a list of domains blocked by the registry, which is Eurid, and cannot be registered.

Note: When transferring a domain, one year is added to the remaining expiration period.

Lifecycle
As domains have an expiration date, they follow a lifecycle through different phases or periods. This lifecycle is established by ICANN, the entity responsible for domain-related regulations. In the following chart, you can see the lifecycle of a .EU domain and its statuses.

  • Available domain: the domain has not yet been registered, therefore it is available. Once a registration request is submitted, it will be assigned to the first request received.
  • Registered domain: when a request is submitted for an available domain, it is assigned to the requester. When submitting a registration request, the number of years must be chosen, ranging from 1 to 10 years.
  • Active domain: the domain remains active for the number of years for which it was registered. During this period, the number of years can be extended to prevent expiration.
  • Quarantine period: this period lasts 40 days, during which the domain has been deleted but can be restored and renewed at a higher price than the usual renewal.

Multilingual .eu domains – IDN special characters
Registering .eu domains with IDN special characters
Since December 10th, 2009, it has been possible to register .eu domains with special characters from the following character sets: Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic. For Spanish use, you must use the Latin set, which allows you to register using the special characters ñ, á, é, í, ï, ó, ú, and ü. When registering an IDN .eu domain, it is not necessary to own the same domain without special characters — they are independent. For example, one person may own lópez.eu and another lopez.eu; they are different domains.

How to register an .eu IDN domain?
You must request the registration directly using the special character from the domain registration page. The system will indicate whether it is available.

Transferring .eu domains with IDN special characters
You can transfer your .eu domain registered at another provider from our domain transfer page. You must enter the .eu domain including the special character. The system will show whether it is transferable.
