FAQs: transfer domains

We have a tutorial that explains all the requirements and steps for transferring domains to cdmonTransfer a domain to cdmon

Question: What does transferring a domain mean?
Answer:
Transferring a domain means changing the registrar. That is, you can buy a domain from, for example, www.comprar-dominios.com, and then decide that cdmon.com offers you better prices/services/advantages etc.

Q: Why transfer it to cdmon.com?
A:
Our main advantages are the wide range of free services that we provide with your domain registration/transfer. This is highly valued by our customers, since with most other registrars these are paid services or of unacceptable quality.

Q: I have a domain registered with another registrar that is not cdmon, can I transfer it?
A:
Yes, you can transfer it. You will need the domain authorization code (AuthCode) which your current registrar can provide. Once you have the code, request the transfer from the transfer request page on our website.

Q: What should I keep in mind before starting the transfer process?
A:
Before starting the transfer process of a domain to cdmon.com, you must ensure that it is not expired, that it is not locked (registrar-lock), and that you have access to the email listed as the domain's administrative contact.

Q: What is the domain authorization code? (AUTH CODE, Secret Code, Auth Info, Auth ID, Key Info)
A:
It is a code necessary to perform the domain transfer. Currently, the AUTH CODE is required for transfers of .com, .net, .org, .cat, .eu, .info, .mobi, .tel, .biz, .us, .tv, .name, .pw, .in, .fm, .bz, .co, .mx, .com.mx, .pe, .it, .fr and .pt domains. This code is obtained from your current registrar, with the exception of the .eu extension.
.eu.
At cdmon, we show it to you by accessing your control panel, in the Registered domains section, by clicking on Show AUTH CODE. If you do not have this code, we will not be able to successfully complete a domain transfer. Having it and ensuring it is correct is essential.

Q: How long does a domain transfer approximately take?
A:
The time depends on how effective the procedures are. That is, three parties are involved in a transfer process: You, us (cdmon.com), and your current registrar. When you start the transfer process, we send you a confirmation email stating that you agree to transfer the domain to us. Then we contact your current registrar, asking them to release the domain registration. They may contact you again to confirm that you agree to the transfer, and finally, if everything is correct, the domain is transferred and renewed.

With the latest ICANN revision regarding domain transfers, if the email we send you is not replied to within 5 days, the domain will not be transferred. The time frame depends on the extension, ranging from hours in the case of .ES to a maximum of 11 days for .MX.

Q: What if my domain has already expired?
A:
If your domain has expired, it is advisable to renew the domain with your current registrar and wait 45 days before requesting the transfer.

Q: What does it mean that a domain is locked?
A:
Some registrars allow domains to be locked to prevent "involuntary" changes to DNS, contact persons, owners, and illicit transfers. If you, or your current registrar, have your domain locked and you request a transfer, it cannot be processed and will be automatically canceled. Therefore, before starting the transfer of your domain to cdmon.com, make sure that your domain is not locked on your current registrar's website.

Q: What does the email I have received from cdmon.com mean?
A:
When we initiate a domain transfer, you receive a message from cdmon.com at the current administrative contact's email address, instructing you to go to a website and indicate whether you accept or reject the domain transfer. It is important that you do this as soon as possible. If you do not accept the transfer, it cannot be completed successfully.

Q: What does the email I have received from my current registrar mean?
A:
You may later receive another email, this time from your current registrar, indicating steps to follow to confirm that you agree to the transfer. Read the email carefully and follow the instructions there. If you do not perform these steps, the domain will still be automatically transferred after the fifth day.

Q: What happens if the domain transfer process fails?
A:
The transfer may fail at some point in the process and not complete successfully. In that case, we will send you an automatic email describing the reasons why the process may have failed. If necessary, you can contact our customer service at info@cdmon.com.

Q: How can I transfer the domain for several years?
A:
Typically, a domain transfer includes a one-year renewal. cdmon.com allows you to transfer for more than one year, because when the process is finished, we automatically renew the domain for the number of years you indicated minus the renewal year. That is, you request a domain transfer for 5 years: when the renewal process ends, we renew the domain for an additional 4 years, making a total of 5 years.

Q: Can I transfer domains from cdmon to other registrars?
A:
If for any reason you wish to transfer a domain registered at cdmon.com to another registrar, you will receive an email from the registrar to which you have requested the transfer (at the account listed as the domain's administrative contact), asking for your consent regarding said transfer. If you accept the transfer, the process will continue without any problem. Keep in mind that it is very important to accept or reject the email you receive, because if you did not initiate the transfer process, someone may be trying to steal the domain.

Q: What happens if my domain expires during the transfer process?
A:
An expired domain cannot be transferred. If you requested the domain transfer before its expiration and it was accepted by the administrative contact at the time of your request, you should not worry. The domain will be in transfer and will be renewed upon completion.

However, if a problem occurred during the transfer, either because the administrative contact did not accept the request before it expired, or because the process gave an error due to a lock or incorrect auth code, you may not be able to complete the request.
In this state, you should renew the domain with your current registrar and request the cancellation of the transfer from your control panel (which will result in a refund of the amount).

Q: My current registrar says that to transfer a .eu domain I do not need an AUTH CODE. Why do you request it? How can I get it?
A:
Some registrars do not require the Auth Code for transferring a .eu domain. In these cases, the owner receives a message to accept it.

However, it is another accepted method to verify that the owner accepts the transfer, since only the owner can obtain it. In this case, simply obtaining the Auth Code is sufficient for the transfer to complete successfully.
You can find complete information on how to obtain the Auth Code for a .eu domain in our help on .eu domain transfers.

Q: My domain expires in less than 10 days and the website does not allow me to request the transfer.
A:
We do not recommend transferring a domain if it is going to expire in the next 10 days, in case there is any problem with the request and it cannot be successfully completed. In these cases, it is more advisable to renew the domain with your current registrar and then request the transfer.

Remember that you do not have to wait until the last moment to request a transfer, because the domain's expiration date is maintained and you in no case lose the amount paid for the previous registration.

Q: My current registrar does not provide me with the AUTH CODE / Unlock. Can I request the transfer? What can I do?
A:
A transfer cannot be requested without the authorization code, and if the domain is locked, it cannot be carried out.

In these cases where the current provider does not facilitate the domain transfer, you should file a complaint with the managing entity Internic.net so that they provide you with whatever is necessary to successfully complete the transfer.

Q: I do not have access to the email account of the domain's administrative contact
A:
If you do not have access to the administrative contact's email account, you must change it with your current registrar to one you have access to.

You can find information on how to request such a change in the transfer help on our website.

Q: I want to request the transfer of several domains at once. How can I do it?
A:
You can request the transfer of several domains at once using our bulk transfer system.

Q: When transferring the domain, are the DNS modified?
A:
No. To prevent your domain from losing operability, cdmon does not modify the domain's DNS during transfer processes.

Once the transfer is completed, you can modify its DNS from the control panel.

Q: Why do I have to pay to transfer a domain?
A:
Domain transfers at cdmon have a cost because they include a one-year renewal of the domain.

Q: If I request a transfer, what expiration date will I have when the process is completed?
A:
Since the transfer includes a one-year renewal of the domain, the expiration date will be one year later than the expiration date you had before requesting the transfer.

Q: Do I have to wait for the domain to expire to request the transfer?
A:
No. Our recommendation is to always request the transfer at least 10 days before your domain expires.

Remember that you do not have to wait until the last moment to request a transfer, because the domain's expiration date is maintained and you in no case lose the amount paid for the previous registration.

Q: If I didn't have time to accept the approval, do I have to buy the transfer again from the cdmon website?
A:
No. Once requested, transfers can be managed from the domain control panel at cdmon, in the "Registered domains" section, by clicking the "Manage" button associated with the domain. From that section, you can reprocess the transfer by clicking "Reprocess".

You can find more information about managing transfers from the control panel on our website.

Q: Who should provide me with the authorization code (Auth Code) for my domain?
A:
The authorization code must be provided by the company where you have the domain registered.

If the domain is registered with cdmon, the authorization code can be obtained from the control panel.

Q: I want to transfer a domain to cdmon, can you tell me the authorization code?
A:
No. The authorization code must be requested from the current registrar of the domain.

Q: The company where I have my domain registered says that an authorization code is not needed to transfer the domain, is that possible?
A:
Yes, it is possible if it is a .co.uk or .cc domain. For other extensions, the Auth Code exists and is an essential requirement (which your current registrar must provide) to request a transfer.

Q: How can I obtain the authorization code for my domain at cdmon?
A:
If the domain is registered with cdmon, the authorization code can be obtained from the
control panel.

Q: The authorization code I entered when requesting the transfer did not work, why?
A:
If during the transfer process the Auth Code entered is incorrect, the process errors and a message is sent to the client indicating the error.

From the cdmon control panel, you can manage requested transfers and verify the entered code. Check it for any errors, and if not, contact your registrar to provide you with a correct code.
You can then reprocess the transfer from your control panel, entering a new Auth Code.

Q: Can I transfer a domain to cdmon if I don't have the authorization code?
A:
No. The Auth Code is an essential requirement to carry out a transfer.
Only in the case of .co.uk or .cc domains can a transfer be performed without an authorization code.

Q: What happens if I renewed a gTLD domain after it expired and transfer it to cdmon within 45 days of the renewal date?

A: The transfer of a gTLD domain always implicitly includes its renewal for one year. It is not possible to transfer it without the domain being renewed.
However, if your domain expired and was renewed after expiration, and you transfer it to cdmon within 45 days of the renewal date, the renewal at your previous registrar is canceled and the amount is refunded to your previous registrar. Therefore, the domain will only be renewed by the transfer and not by the renewal you paid for at your old registrar.
Keep this in mind, because you will need to request a refund of the renewal amount from your previous registrar.
