Here you will find all the information regarding .name domains.

General information
The .name domain is part of the generic domains created in 2001 by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), alongside .info, .biz, .museum, and .aero. It is the only Internet domain exclusively dedicated to individuals; unlike others, it is not intended for companies or organizations.
The .name domain, unlike other domains, is exclusively intended for private users, and its purpose is to offer individuals an email address with their first name, surname, or nickname. The .name domain assignment follows a different procedure from other Internet domains, avoiding scarcity and allowing email addresses such as name@surname.name to be available, unlike most other domains. In Peru, the .name domain has been adapted by NIC.pe as .nom.

Why register a .name domain?
The main attraction of .name domains is email, as you can use your first and last name to receive messages. For example: myname@mysurname.name.

Life cycle
Since domains have an expiration date, they follow a life cycle consisting of several phases. This cycle is established by ICANN, the entity responsible for domain regulations. The graphic below shows the life cycle of a .name domain and its different states.

  • Available domain: the domain has not yet been registered and is available. When a registration request is submitted, it will be assigned to the first request received.
  • Registered domain: when a request is submitted for an available domain, it is assigned to the applicant. The registration can be requested for a number of years, ranging from 1 to 10 years.
  • Active domain: the domain will remain active for the number of years it was registered. During this period, additional years can be added to prevent expiration.
  • Grace period: the domain has expired and stops working. This period lasts 30 days and you can renew the domain without penalty fees.
  • Redemption period: this period lasts 30 days, during which the domain has been deleted but can be restored and renewed at a higher price than a standard renewal.
  • Pending delete: the domain cannot be restored and will soon be released.
