Restrictions
 .nl domain registration restrictions:
  • .nl domains can contain a maximum of 63 characters and a minimum of 3.
  • Any individual or legal entity has the right to obtain the domain.
  • Allowed characters for registration are: a–z, 0–9, and the hyphen “-”. The hyphen cannot appear at the beginning or end of the name.
  • .nl domains can only be registered for a maximum of 1 year and expire 2 days before the anniversary date.
  • This domain does not allow IDN multilingual character registration.
  • The registrant contact must have an address in the Netherlands, otherwise the registrar’s company address will be assigned.

.nl domain renewal restrictions:
  • A .nl domain can be renewed for a period of 1 year, only starting from 1 month before it expires.

.nl domain transfer restrictions:
  • .nl domains cannot be transferred if they are expired.
  • A registered .nl domain can be transferred at any time during its lifecycle.
  • Domain contacts are not modified during the transfer.
  • To approve the transfer of .nl domains, the Authcode is required. Once the transfer is completed, the expiration date is reset and starts again from the new date plus 1 year.
  • Transfer is performed immediately without the need to accept any validation email.

Life cycle
Since domains have an expiration date, they follow a life cycle that goes through different phases or periods. This life cycle is established by ICANN, the entity in charge of domain regulations. In the following image, we show you the life cycle of a .nl domain and its statuses.

  • Available domain: the domain has not yet been registered and is therefore available. When a registration request is submitted, it will be assigned to the first request received.
  • Registered domain: when a request is submitted for an available domain, it is assigned to the requester. Registration is requested for a number of years, which can be 1.
  • Active domain: the domain will remain active for the number of years for which it was registered. During this time, the number of years can be extended to prevent expiration.
  • Redemption period (Quarantine): this period lasts 40 days. The domain has been deleted, but it can be restored and renewed at a higher price than the usual renewal fee.
  • Pending delete: the domain cannot be restored and will be released.
