The .pt domain is the geographic top-level domain (ccTLD) for Portugal.
Reason to register a .pt domain
Any person or entity can register a .pt domain.
Register a .pt domain
Restrictions on registering .pt domains:
- .pt domains can have a maximum of 63 characters and a minimum of 3.
- Allowed characters: a-z, 0-9, and hyphen (-). The hyphen cannot be at the beginning or end.
- They can be registered for a period of 1, 3, or 5 years.
- The domain owner cannot be changed automatically.
- They cannot be locked.
Restrictions on renewing .pt domains:
- A .pt domain has a renewal period of 1, 3, or 5 years.
- They cannot be renewed more than 60 days before expiration.
Restrictions on transferring .pt domains:
- .pt domains cannot be transferred if they are expired.
- The AUTH CODE is essential. It can only be used once and is valid for 30 days.
Having an expiration date, domains have a life cycle that goes through different phases.
For .pt domains, this cycle does not include a redemption period.
Once expired, the domain goes directly into the deletion process.
- Domain available: the domain is not registered and can be requested by anyone.
- Domain registered: the domain is assigned to the applicant for a period of 1, 3, or 5 years.
- Domain active: the domain works normally during the contracted period.
- Domain expired: if not renewed before the expiration date, the domain stops working and is no longer renewable.
- Domain pending deletion: the domain goes directly into the deletion process, with no redemption period or possibility of restoration. Once finished, it becomes available for registration again.
