Types of WHOIS data from a domain: Extended State Information

A registered domain can have different statuses, which refer to the current situation of the domain (life cycle) and what actions can be performed with it.

Among the possible domain statuses, you may find the following:

  • OK: The domain is active. This is the usual status of a registered, non-expired domain.
  • clientTransferProhibited: The domain is active but locked. In this state, the domain cannot be transferred to another registrar.
  • clientDeleteProhibited: The domain is active. This status prevents requesting the deletion of the domain. It usually appears along with clientTransferProhibited and clientUpdateProhibited.
  • clientUpdateProhibited: The domain is active. This status prevents requesting updates to the domain. It usually appears along with clientTransferProhibited and clientDeleteProhibited.
  • clientHold: The domain is expired and inactive. In the life cycle, this status corresponds to the Grace Period. In this state, it is possible to renew the domain at the normal price to make it active again.
  • redemptionPeriod: The domain is expired and inactive. In the life cycle, this status corresponds to the Redemption Period. In this state, the domain can be renewed at a higher price to become active again.
  • pendingDelete: The domain is at the end of its life cycle, pending deletion. In the life cycle, this status corresponds to the Deletion Period. In this state, the domain can no longer be renewed; you must wait until it becomes available again.

The status of a domain can be checked by performing a query in our whois search tool. Below is an example of where to check the status information (via the Status field):
