Restrictions on registering .us domains:
- .us domains can have a maximum of 63 characters and a minimum of 2.
- The characters accepted for domain registration are: a-z, 0-9, and hyphen "-". The "-" cannot be placed at the beginning or the end of the name.
- They can be registered for a period of 1 to 10 years.
- Only people who have some kind of relationship with the United States can register .us domains.
Restrictions on renewing .us domains:
- A .us domain can be renewed for a period of 1 to 10 years.
Restrictions on transferring .us domains:
- .us domains cannot be transferred if they are expired.
- .us domains cannot be transferred if they are in clientTransferProhibited status.
- To start the transfer of .us domains, the AUTH CODE is required.
- To accept the transfer of a .us domain, you must have access to the administrative contact email of the domain.
Since domains have an expiration date, they go through various phases or periods in their lifecycle. This lifecycle is established by ICANN, the entity responsible for domain regulations. In the following graphic, we show you the lifecycle of a .us domain and its stages.
- Available domain: the domain has not yet been registered, therefore it is available. When a registration request is submitted, it will be assigned to the first request received.
- Registered domain: when a request is made for an available domain, it is assigned to the requester. When submitting a registration request, you can apply for 1 to 10 years.
- Active domain: the domain will remain active for the number of years for which it was registered. During this period, the registration can be extended to prevent expiration.
- Grace period: the domain has expired and stops working. This period lasts 40 days, during which you can renew the domain without penalty.
- Redemption period: this period lasts 30 days, during which the domain has been deleted but can be restored and renewed at a higher price than the usual renewal fee.
- Pending delete: the domain cannot be restored and will be released.
