FAQs: Domain Contacts

Question: What are domain contacts?
Answer:
Domain contacts are the data that appears in the registration of a specific domain. The data usually consists of: first and last name, company, address, city, country, email, phone, etc.

Q: What types of contacts are there usually?
A:
Depending on the domain extension, you may have several contacts up to a total of four. The owner contact (owner, individual or company, co-ownership is not allowed), the administrative contact, the technical contact, and the billing contact.

Q: What are contacts used for?
A:
Each contact can have different uses: the owner contact is always the sole legitimate owner of the domain, and is also the person responsible for the use of the domain, so they must assume responsibility for what is done with it. The administrative contact is usually responsible for management and is essential, for example, when transferring the domain. The technical contact is the person to contact for technical problems, and the billing contact is contacted for matters related to domain payment; it can also be used for invoicing. But at cdmon we have billing contacts independent of domains. In many cases, the same data is entered for several contacts, and the same contact can be used for all of them.

Q: Can they be modified?
A:
It depends directly on the extension. gTLD domains (.com, .net, .org, .cat, .info, etc.) allow modifications of all contacts from the same registrar in a few moments. Other extensions require some special procedures:

Q: Can I know the contact details of a domain even if it is not mine?
A: Yes, if the current owner of the domain has not hidden the data. To do this, you must perform a
whois query on the domain whose contacts you wish to know. cdmon, as an ICANN-accredited registrar, has a whois query page. Entering the domain and clicking "Get Information" displays a window with the domain's data. This service is useful for various applications, and with it you can also obtain information about the domain's DNS servers.

Q: Are my domain contacts shown?
A: No, unless as the domain owner you activate the option in the control panel that makes the contact data public. At cdmon we guarantee the protection of your data; if you do not explicitly approve them being public, we will not show them.

Q: What is NIC_HANDLE (also called identifier)?
A: It is the identifier assigned to .es domain contacts. It is created by ESNIC when you register a .es domain with cdmon. These contacts include information such as: first and last name, address, phone number, email account, etc. The identifier for each contact is of the type XXXX-ESNIC-F4. You can use the same Nic_Handle for all domain contacts (administrative contact, technical contact, etc.) and also for contacts of other .es domains you have already registered or will register in the future.
