Here you will find all the information related to .info domains.

General information
.info is a top-level Internet domain designed for informational websites, although its use is not restricted. It was part of a widely publicized ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) announcement in late 2000 introducing seven new top-level domains (gTLDs). The seven new gTLDs, selected from over 180 proposals, were created to relieve pressure on the heavily saturated .com domain.
.info became the most successful of the seven new domains, with more than 3 million domains registered by mid-2006. Of these, over 1.6 million .info websites are active.

Motivation for registering a .info domain
.info domains are gTLDs. They have no registration restrictions. Although originally intended for informational websites, they were eventually opened completely and the restriction was removed.

Restrictions
Restrictions for registering .info domains:
  • .info domains may have a maximum of 63 characters and a minimum of 2.
  • Accepted characters: a-z, 0-9 and the hyphen "-". The hyphen cannot be placed at the beginning or the end of the domain name.

Restrictions for renewing .info domains:
  • A .info domain can be renewed for a maximum period of up to 10 years.

Restrictions for transferring .info domains:
  • .info domains cannot be transferred if they are expired.
  • .info domains cannot be transferred if they are in the status clientTransferProhibited.
  • To start the transfer of a .info domain, the AUTHCODE is required.
  • To accept the transfer of a .info domain, you must have access to the administrative contact's email address.

Lifecycle
Since domains have an expiration date, they follow a lifecycle that goes through several phases. This lifecycle is established by ICANN, the entity responsible for domain regulations. The following graphic shows the lifecycle of a .info domain and its stages.

  • Domain available: the domain has not yet been registered, and is therefore free to be registered. When a registration request is submitted, the domain is assigned to the first received request.
  • Domain registered: when a request is submitted for an available domain, it is assigned to the requester. Registration can be made for 1 to 10 years.
  • Active domain: the domain remains active during the registration period. During this time, the number of years can be extended to avoid expiration.
  • Grace period: the domain has expired and stops working. This period lasts 30 days and allows renewal without penalty.
  • Redemption period: this period lasts 30 days, during which the domain has been deleted but can be restored and renewed at a higher cost.
  • Pending delete: the domain can no longer be restored and will be released.

Multilingual .info domains – IDN special characters
Registering domains with special characters (IDN)
.info domains allow registration using special characters such as ñ. Accented and umlaut vowels are also allowed: á, é, í, ó, ú, ü. When registering an IDN .info domain, it is not necessary to own the non-accented version; they are independent. For example, one person may own lópez.info and someone else lopez.info — they are different domains.

How to register an IDN .info domain?
You must request the registration directly with the special character from the domain registration page. The system will tell you if it is available and allow you to complete the registration.

Transfer of domains with special characters (IDN)
You can transfer your .info domain registered with another provider through our domain transfer page. You must enter the .info domain with the special character. The system will show you whether it can be transferred and guide you through the process.
