Restrictions
Restrictions for registering .lu domains:
  • .lu domains may contain a maximum of 63 characters and a minimum of 2.
  • The accepted characters for .lu domain registration are: a–z, special characters (ä, ö, ü, à, â, æ, ç, è, é, ê, ë, î, ï, ô, ù, û, œ), 0–9, and hyphen "-". The hyphen cannot be the first or last character of the domain name and cannot appear consecutively.
  • Ownership changes must be requested via ticket and have a cost because they include one year of renewal.
  • Changing the owner resets the expiration date starting from the date the ownership change becomes effective.
  • The domain must have an active DNS service at the time of registration.

Restrictions for renewing .lu domains:
  • A .lu domain can be renewed for a maximum period of 1 year.

Restrictions for transferring .lu domains:
  • .lu domains cannot be transferred if they are expired.
  • .lu domains cannot be transferred if they are in the status clientTransferProhibited.
  • An AUTHCODE is required to initiate the transfer of .lu domains.
  • During the transfer, contacts are modified and the expiration date is reset starting from the effective transfer date. Therefore, it is recommended to initiate the transfer close to the expiry date.

Lifecycle
Since domains have an expiration date, they go through several phases or periods. This lifecycle is established by ICANN, the entity responsible for domain regulations. The following graphic shows the lifecycle of a .lu domain and its states.

  • Available domain: the domain has not yet been registered and is available. Once a registration request is submitted, it will be assigned to the first request received.
  • Registered domain: when a request is submitted for an available domain, it is assigned to the requester. When requesting registration, it can be registered for 1 to 10 years.
  • Active domain: the domain will remain active for the registration period. During this period, the registration time can be extended. However, renewal can only be done starting from 2 months before the expiration date.
  • Redemption period: this period lasts 30 days. The domain has been deleted but can be restored and renewed at a higher price than the standard renewal.
  • Pending delete: the domain can no longer be restored and will be released.
