.mobi domain information

Here you will find all the information related to .mobi domains.

General information
On May 22, 2006, the registration period for .mobi domains opened, specifically intended for websites optimized for mobile devices.
To obtain a .mobi domain it is necessary to agree with mLTD (mobile Top Level Domain) to comply with a series of standards. This entity will audit the websites using this domain, and if a website does not comply with the rules within the deadlines set by mLTD, it may suspend the domain until the issue is resolved.
Anyone wishing to develop a .mobi website must meet three requirements:
  1. The homepage must be created in XHTML-MP.
  2. The URL must work both with and without “www”.
  3. Frames cannot be used under any circumstances.

Reasons to register a .mobi domain
Anyone can register a .mobi domain. If you want to keep your clients informed or offer your services even when they are not in front of a computer, you should register a .mobi domain and ensure your website is optimized for mobile devices.

Lifecycle
As domains have an expiration date, they go through several lifecycle phases. This lifecycle is established by ICANN, the entity responsible for domain regulations. The following graphic shows the lifecycle of a .mobi domain and its states.

  • Available domain: the domain has not yet been registered and is available. As soon as a registration request is submitted, it will be assigned to the first valid request received.
  • Registered domain: when a request for an available domain is submitted, it is assigned to the requester. Registration can be requested for 1 to 10 years.
  • Active domain: the domain remains active for the duration of the registration period. You may extend the registration period to prevent expiration.
  • Grace period: the domain has expired and stops working. This period lasts 40 days during which you can renew the domain without penalty.
  • Redemption period: this period lasts 30 days. The domain has been deleted, but it can still be restored and renewed at a higher cost than usual.
  • Pending delete: the domain cannot be restored and will soon be released.
