Here you will find all the information related to .es domains.
.es domains are geographic top-level domains (ccTLD) defined for Spain. They are also used by Spanish-speaking communities.
.es domains were created by ICANN in 1988 and their management was granted to Rediris. Since 2000, management has been handled by the public entity Red.es, part of the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade through the State Secretariat for Telecommunications and the Information Society.
Since October 2007, .es domains can include special characters, such as ñ, ç, or accented vowels á, é, í, ó, ú and ü.
Reasons to register a .es domain
The 2005 regulation brought an almost complete liberalization of .es domains. The only requirement is having some kind of link with Spain, and prior checks are only carried out for third-level domains under .gob.es and .edu.es. It is also one of the most secure extensions as you can activate DNSSEC.
Registering a .es domain
To register a .net domain you can go to our website. You have a tutorial that shows you the steps for registering a domain.
Restrictions on registering .es domains
- The 2005 regulation brought an almost complete liberalization for .es domains, the only requirement being some type of link with Spain, and previous checks are only carried out for third-level domains under .gob.es and .edu.es.
- Any natural or legal person with interests or links with Spain has the right to obtain the domain.
- .es domains can be registered for a maximum of 10 years.
- All contacts for .es domains must be natural persons, except the registrant contact which may also be a legal entity.
- The change of ownership must be carried out directly from the dominios.es website. To make this process easier, we can see the steps to follow in the tutorial How to change the owner of a .es domain.
Restrictions on renewing .es domains
- A .es domain can be renewed for a maximum period of up to 10 years.
- A .es domain can be renewed at any time during its lifecycle.
Restrictions on transferring .es domains
- A registered .es domain can be transferred at any time during its lifecycle (including when it is expired).
- To approve the transfer of .es domains, you must have access to the email account of the administrative contact and approve it through a link. You can get more information by accessing the tutorial on the .es domain transfer process.
Since domains have an expiration date, they go through various phases or periods. This lifecycle is established by ICANN, the entity responsible for domain regulations. In the graphic below, we show you the lifecycle of a .NET domain and its stages.
- Available domain: the domain has not yet been registered, therefore it is available for registration. When a registration request is submitted, it will be assigned to the first request received.
- Registered domain: when a request is sent for an available domain, it is assigned to the requester. When a registration request is sent, it can be requested for 1 to 10 years.
- Active domain: the domain will remain active for the number of years requested at registration. During this period, you can extend the number of years to prevent expiration.
- Grace period: the domain has expired and stops working. This period lasts 10 days during which you can renew the domain without penalty.
Registering .es domains with special characters (IDN)
For .es domains, registration is allowed using special characters such as ñ, ç, l·l, as well as accented and diaeresis vowels á, à, é, è, í, ì, ï, ó, ò, ú, ù, and ü. When you register an IDN .es domain, it is not necessary to have the same domain without special characters—they are independent. For example, one person could have lópez.es and another lopez.es; they are different domains.
How do you register an .es IDN domain?
You must request the registration of the domain directly with the special character from the domain registration page. The system will indicate if it is available and you can register it by following the steps.
Transferring .es domains with special characters (IDN)
You can transfer your .es domain registered with another provider from our domain transfer page. You must enter the name of the .es domain with the special character. The system will show you if it is transferable so you can proceed.
