Most common FileZilla errors

Most common FileZilla errors

In certain situations, the web FTP manager cannot be used, which is why we recommend using an external FTP client. We recommend using FileZilla, which is completely free.

It is true that in certain situations, FileZilla’s configuration may limit the connection or the proper functioning of FTP. For this reason, we will list the most common FileZilla errors and how to solve them:

FileZilla cannot detect a connection to the server

It is very common that FileZilla cannot establish the initial connection with the server. Most of the time this happens because the FTP service itself is not enabled. To fix this, simply access the control panel, go to FTP management, and activate it as shown in the following guide: How to enable or disable the FTP service

Too many FTP connections

This error indicates that FTP sessions remain open. In the case of some clients like FileZilla, there are occasions when if the client encounters an error and reconnects, it does not close the previous session. We must review the client configuration and set the number of connections to 1 if it is set higher.

To configure this, we need to go to the "Edit" section in FileZilla and click on "Options..."

Next, go to the first option, "Connection", and modify the maximum number of retries to 1. In other words, if it is set to a number higher than 1, reduce it to this value as shown in the image:

Passive or active connection

Many times the FTP client cannot complete the download of certain files or connect to the server due to the configured connection mode. By default, it is set to "Passive" mode, and for most actions this should be sufficient. However, in certain cases it is necessary to change the mode to "Active". To do so, go to the "Options" section as in the previous case:

Then, within the same "Connection" section, go to FTP, and under "Transfer mode" select "Active":

Hidden files

By default, FileZilla has the option to not display hidden server files enabled, so sometimes it may seem as if the file does not exist. For this process, simply go to the "Server" section and click on "Force showing hidden files" as shown in the image:
