Update the PHP of your website

Update the PHP of your website

PHP is an open-source programming language whose purpose is to generate dynamic web pages. Although it can also be used in other applications, its main use is web development.

Being an open-source language means that anyone can develop or modify the code they need.

Currently, it is the most widely used web programming language in the world, which makes it an attractive target for hackers.

Why do I need to update PHP?
PHP has different versions and, like everything else, each version has its own life cycle. When a PHP version is released, it is actively supported for approximately two years. After this period, the version enters the maintenance phase, which means that only critical security fixes will be provided for a limited time. Meanwhile, a newer PHP version is already available.

Finally, when a version reaches the end of its life cycle, it stops receiving updates. Therefore, it becomes vulnerable and is no longer secure.

You can check the status of PHP versions at the following link. PHP Version Status.

For this reason, at cdmon we encourage you to check your PHP version and, if you are using an outdated version, UPDATE NOW!

What improvements can you get by updating your PHP version:
  • Security: Update your version and increase your website's security. Keeping PHP up to date is a major improvement in protecting against hackers.
  • New features: Having the latest PHP version means access to new features and improvements in programming methods.
  • Speed: The latest PHP versions are faster.

Which PHP version do I have?
To find out which PHP version you are currently using, log in to your cdmon control panel. In the “Basic Service List,” click on the Hosting List menu and then click on Manage for the hosting account you want to check.

On the “Manage hosting” screen, in the “Hosting Information” section, you will see the PHP Version option with the possibility to change it if necessary.

How do I update the PHP version of my hosting?

To update the PHP version of your hosting, we recommend following these steps:

  1. Create a full backup of your website, including both web files and the database. cdmon performs daily backups that are available from your control panel. If you need to restore a backup, visit our help article How to restore a backup of your hosting.
  2. Update your CMS software. If you use WordPress, Joomla, or any other CMS, you must update everything, including plugins and themes. If you use custom development, we recommend reviewing the documentation at this link: https://www.php.net/eol.php. It is very important to keep everything updated to prevent issues when upgrading to the new PHP version.
  3. Once all your software is updated, check your website’s compatibility with the PHP version you want to upgrade to.
  4. Update the PHP version from your cdmon control panel. You can follow this guide to update PHP: How to modify the PHP version.
  5. After updating the PHP version, check that your website is functioning correctly.
