What is PHP Legacy and how does it affect your hosting at cdmon

Many websites run on PHP, whether they use a CMS such as WordPress, Prestashop, Joomla or Moodle, or whether they are custom-developed. If your website generates dynamic content (for example, loads products, processes forms or displays changing data), it is very likely that it uses PHP in its internal operation.

PHP acts as the “engine” that allows the website to respond and display information correctly. Even if you don’t have to manage it directly, the website depends on the PHP version configured on the server.

Over time, older PHP versions stop receiving updates and security patches. For this reason, using a modern version is important to improve your website’s security, speed and compatibility.

At cdmon we provide continuous support for current PHP versions. Starting from January 1, 2026, older PHP versions (EOL) will be considered an additional service.

What is PHP Legacy (EOL)?

All PHP versions that have reached the end of their lifecycle (EOL) are considered PHP Legacy.

These versions no longer receive updates, do not have security patches, and contain known vulnerabilities. Supported PHP versions

Why do they have a cost?

Maintaining older PHP versions involves:

  • Additional isolation to prevent vulnerabilities from affecting the server.
  • Extra monitoring and maintenance.
  • Stricter controls to comply with European and Spanish regulations (NIS2, ENS, ISO 27001…).
  • Manual patching and mitigation of security risks.

These versions no longer have official support, so maintaining them requires more resources.

The add-on applies per machine, not per hosting version.

  • Flat rate: €20/month, regardless of the number of EOL versions used on that server.
What do we recommend?

You can continue using PHP Legacy while you transition, but it is important to keep in mind that:

Staying on an old PHP version is risky. They do not have security patches, contain open vulnerabilities and are becoming increasingly incompatible with WordPress, Prestashop, Joomla and other CMSs.

The PHP Legacy add-on should be considered a temporary solution, not a stable long-term environment.
