Basic characteristics of domains

Your domain is your identity on the Internet. With one or more domains and an active hosting and email service, you can be visited by any user at any time of the day.

 

Domains consist of a name and an extension. They are separated by a dot. Thus, in cdmon.com, cdmon is the name and com is the extension.

 The name is also called SLD and the extension, TLD. Depending on the type of information your site contains, you can choose one extension or another:

• Generic domains (gTLD): these are the most well-known extensions. They have no restrictions. You can register any available one with total autonomy.
  • .com domains and .net
  • .info domains
  • .org domains
  • .biz domains
  • .name domains
  • .asia domains
  • .pro domains

• Restricted domains (sTLD): these are extensions where your website must meet certain technical or linguistic requirements.
  • .cat domains: limited to websites that have at least some content in Catalan.
  • .mobi domains: must contain content that is accessible from a mobile phone.
  • .tel domains: redirect to a list of contacts, links, email, address, etc., which you keep updated.
  • .xxx domains: only for registered members of the adult entertainment industry (otherwise the domain does not resolve at DNS level).

• Regional domains (ccTLD): these domains identify the region from which the website originates. They often have linguistic or regional restrictions:
  • .es domains: ideal for websites with content in Spanish.
  • .eu domains: European identity, ideal for foreign market strategies.
  • .us domains: regional domains of the United States.
  • .tv domains: regional domains of Tuvalu, often related to audiovisual content.
  • .cc domains: regional domains of the Cocos Islands, usually for commercial websites.
  • .me domains: regional domains of Montenegro.
  • .ws domains: regional domains of Western Samoa; also associated with "website".
  • .de domains: regional domains of Germany.
  • .be domains: regional domains of Belgium.
  • .co.uk domains: regional domains of the United Kingdom.
  • .nl domains: regional domains of the Netherlands.
  • .ch domains: regional domains of Switzerland.
  • .pw domains: regional domains of the Republic of Palau.
  • .in domains: regional domains of India.
  • .bz domains: regional domains of Belize.
  • .fm domains: regional domains of the Federated States of Micronesia.
  • .co domains: regional domains of Colombia.
  • .mx and .com.mx domains: regional domains of Mexico.
  • .pe domains: regional domains of Peru.
  • .cl domains: regional domains of Chile.
  • .com.ar domains: regional domains of Argentina.
  • .ec domains: regional domains of Ecuador.
  • .it domains: regional domains of Italy.
  • .fr domains: regional domains of France.
  • .pl domains: regional domains of Poland.
  • .pt domains: regional domains of Portugal.
